Event Feature: Dice Making 101

April 2, 2022 Posted by Madeline Davis Event Feature

We all love those shiny math rocks that can treat us so good or so bad. But what about creating our own, unique sets? Custom dice making has taken off in recent years, with makers being able to support full companies with Etsy shops, Instagram accounts, and even retail stores.

Check out our interview with Alec, local dice creator and owner of Druid Dice Co.

When did you first get into dice making?

I started about 8 years ago when I wanted to make gifts for my D&D group!

When did it change from a hobby to a career?

3 years ago after I really looked into hiring a 4th person it was getting way too cramped in my garage!

Tell us about your company!

Founded by myself, Alec Ward and with the support of my loving wife Dawn Hamburg, Druid Dice started due to my passion for tabletop gaming, 3D modeling, and printing. While creating unique and exciting adventures for D&D campaigns, I was drawn into the world of total customization. With the desire to create custom dice to match our gaming friend’s characters I found a new passion in master dice making and casting. Soon I was sharing the dice with others and quickly found joy in the process and collaboration with makers around the world. From humble beginnings out a of the garage, Druid Dice has grown into a full time business that supports not only our family but a dedicated team of makers from the greater Kansas City area

Any tips for first time dice makers?

Go slow! Nothing good happens fast! Take time choosing the right materials to start on the right foot. The dice making community is a great resource and very inclusive so don’t be afraid to reach out on discussion forums and in-person!

Twice monthly, Alec teaches a Dice Making 101 class with C^3 and TT. The class starts at $40 and includes personal instruction and you’ll finish the class with two full sets of dice. You can add on an additional dice finishing class or pay Druid Dice to finish your sets.
